REPERCUSSIONS
A moment's lapse, a child is dead,
An infant dies by accident;
This is a parent's greatest dread.
Is anyone so diligent?
In others do we have to trust,
We check credentials carefully;
But still we may wind up nonplussed,
When later there's a tragedy.
The death does parents devastate,
No matter what, it seems their fault;
For nothing can alleviate,
As mind and stomachs somersault.
The baby sitter hurts as well,
"If only" does her mind abuse;
She lives within her private Hell,
For she's the one they all accuse.
While those who had their children there,
Made guilty by the whole affair;
In their relief, no grief can share,
Yet there's no safety anywhere.
Grandparents now take extra care,
Their fears aroused by what they read;
A tragedy they could not bear,
And warnings children will not heed.
A child is ever in God's hands,
No human can a child protect;
A fact each person understands,
And God's decision must respect.
Unless there's been gross negligence,
No guilt should we to one attach;
For with the greatest diligence,
The fates may still disaster hatch.
With caution should we all proceed,
The lesson taught, not to be spurned;
So all precautions we should heed,
But all may still be overturned.
