THE MIND OF MAN

So many facts do penetrate,
So many more are still unknown;
Much progress has been made of late,
But moral ethics have not grown.

For man seems much more callous now,
With self and family supreme;
To Mammon do more people bow,
As all now seek the finest cream.

Primeval passions still do rule,
Each hunter would produce the best;
All sharing he would ridicule,
The spoils of prowess for his nest.

While time has tempered all these needs,
And Faith has taught some lessons new;
Yet in his soul are still those seeds,
Affecting all he now would do.

In time these lessons will be learned,
Mankind will be more civilized;
>From selfishness we will be turned,
With altruism eulogized.
